受党争影响，北宋后期的士人一改北宋中期昂扬向上、积极进取的士风，表现出一种偷安自适、任性逍遥的精神风貌，入世意志大为淡化。北宋后期士风的变化，说明同中国古代文人的心灵历程一样，北宋文人士大夫的思想意识基本上也是儒道互补的矛盾构造。
