A Corpus-based Differentiation of English Synonyms

This paper introduces how to learn English synonyms by utilizing corpus: firstly, to find out its regional difference in usage according to the statistic of one synonym's distribution frequency in different corpuses; second, to sort out the difference of the usage by analyzing the vocabulary frequency distribution in various registers of corpus; last, by looking through the retrieval line, to summarize the different linking behavior in it and the typical collocations and make a quantitative analysis of the collocations to reveal the differences of synonyms at the level of semantic prosody. This approach not only puts forward a new way of differentiating English synonyms, but complements the traditional differentiation of vocabulary.
