For a long time in history the salt industry was the pillar industry of ancient Ningbo and from the pre-Qin to the Qing dynasty the city had established production and management organizations with distinctive local characteristics. Therefore the place-names of Ningbo often bear the features of the salt culture. With an examination of the place-names, this article is a study of the history of the salt industry and the unique topography of ancient Ningbo.
