The debate,between Xiong Shili and Mou Zongsan,on how to paraphrase the meaning of "investigation of things and extension of knowledge",represented two ways of annotating Chinese classics.The debate reflected their different ways of thinking about the relation between knowledge and value.Mou,upon the debate,became enthusiastic in studying epistemology.This article scrutinizes the significance of this bifurcation and the following complementary,transitional, and developmental points in an examination of the two philosophers' later achievement.
