| Abstract: | It was a movement of profound historical background and solid theoretical basis to popularize Common Spoken Chinese and to simplify Chinese characters.Historically,controversies over this problem involved quite some eminent figures such as Zhang Tai-yan,Qian Xuan-tong,Zhao Yuan-ren,Li Jin-xi,Cai Yuan-pei,Qu Qiu-bai,Wu Yu-zhang.This essay therefore sets out to expound the theoretical basis of the movement by analyzing those controversies in the light of their academic background,with a view to accelerating the pace of reforms in the Chinese language. |
