20世纪前半期,中国掀起了西南民族研究热,大学和研究机构纷纷开展了西南民族调查,中山大学是西南民族研究与调查的先驱之一.20世纪20年代后期,该校生物系师生实地调查了两广瑶族.随后,中山大学语言历史学研究所和中央研究院历史语言研究所合作,调查云南民族,这是中国学者第一次有组织有影响的西南民族调查.20世纪30年代中后期至40年代,中山大学人文社会学科师生广泛开展了西南民族调查,成就斐然,中大因而成为西南民族调查的重镇.
