On Confrontation of Ci Poetry's Elegance and Popularity in Song Dynasty

Elegance and popularity have been in the process of mergence, separation, and growth and decline. Ci poetry was developed in the mid and late Tong Dynasty and became a splendid sight in North Song Dynasty. From Liu Yong through Su Shi arose two different writing trends--styles of elegance and popularity. The confrontation of the two styles had different sources and progress, contaminated with their own cultural characteristics. It appeared distinct in the background of reform in aesthetic standards for ci poetry. It not only indicated that Qi Qing founded the romantic and sentimental school and Dong Po founded the heroic school of Ci writing, but became the evolution key of Ci's elegance and popularity in North Song Dynasty.
