绅士德性论

绅士在古代中国主要是指一种社会阶层。在西方,绅士可以说是西方社会表达一类人格类型和行为方式的一个综合性概念,与我国古代的“君子”一词有相近的意思。绅士的基本特点是:教养、礼貌、尊重妇女、德性。绅士的德性首先体现为自身做人的基本优良品德,如诚实、正直、忠诚;其次,体现为绅士对他人的鲜明的道德态度和待人之道,如同情、仁慈、温和、宽容、慷慨;再次,则体现出绅士对自己行为、处事的强烈的自我控制的理智精神和坚强意志,如谨慎、自制、节制、坚定、自尊、荣誉。

The Moral Character of Gentleman

Gentleman refers to a social class in ancient China. Gentleman indicates an integrating concept of a type of character and manner of behaviour in western society, similar to "man of honour" in ancient China. The characteristics of a gentleman include: good education and polite manner, respect for women and high moral character. The embodiment of the moral character of a gentleman can be described as follows: first, such basic morals as honesty, integrity and loyalty; second, a gentleman's morality and manner to treat others as sympathy, benevolence, modest, tolerance and generosity; third, a gentleman's self-control sensibility and strong will as prudence, continence, abstinence, firmness, self-esteem and honour.
