| Abstract: | The pun is a common rhetorical device in both Chinese and English. Owing to the frequent non-correspondence of words' denotations in the two languages and the arbitrary relations between meaning and pronunciation, it is difficult to reproduce the effects of English puns in Chinese translation. This difficulty points to the limitation of Nida's functional equivalence theory. |
