Associating and Channeling Cultural Knowledge in ELT

There is a recognition both in the English teaching syllabus and in the ELT circle that ELT is not only teaching language, but teaching culture as well. It is very desirable for the English teachers to channel the cultural knowledge into the process of lauguage teaching so as to gradually foster the students' awareness of cross-culture communication. The article points out the close relationship between language and culture by analyzing from diverse aspects the imbedded cultural knowledge in the English words, idioms and discourse, and puts forward the contents to be channeled, the principles to comply with and the methods to employ.
