Shen Congwen described in his novels a group of kind and beautiful girls living in western Hunan, whose prototype is actually Guanyin popularly worshipped among the Chinese people, including those of western Hunan, the native place of Mr. Shen. Such a worship, as a result, greatly influenced Shen's aesthetic taste, leanings and novel writing. On the other hand, Shen adopted a rational attitude toward the worship, describing the fate of the girls differently from the traditional happy-ending type.
