George Brandes' Method: An Inspiration for the Construction of the Literary History

For decades, the research methodology of Chinese literary history has many problems such as following suit blindly, rigid stylistic rules and layout, little research of the form and development, and inability of reforming the traditional methods. However, we may be enlightened by reading G. Brandes' six-volume masterpiece, Essential Aspects of the Nineteenth Century Literature . Brandes has integrated a variety of research methods previously employed in literary history research, emphasized to grasp the essence of literary phenomena in the context of global culture and probe the culture of the European Continent and literature as a whole from a spiritual perspective. He has conducted both micro- and macro-aesthetical analysis on the basis of the characters or incidents which represent the political and cultural lives of their times.
