Irony is a common linguistic phenomenon and a way to express humor or sarcasm. The meaning literally expressed is the opposite of the meaning intended. According to Grice＇ s Cooperative Principle, irony is the violation of the maxim of quality. After the analysis, the paper concludes that speakers＇ intention is true when they use irony, which is in accordance with the maxim of quality so that the communication can go smoothly.
