The Tragedy of Pan Jinlian and Its Significance

Based on character analysis and sociologioal analysis, this paper investigatesthe tragedy of Pan Jinlian (Golden Lotus) with a view to expounding its essence and signifi-cance. Early in her life, Pan Jinlian was haunted by the blackest tragedy. She committed adul-tery with Ximen Qing and later murdered her own husband in the sheer hope of a change fora happier life. After she married Ximen Qing, she became unusually lewd, wily and jealous,yet all this was also determined mainly by the intricate social factors of her days.
