On the Characteristics and Influences of the Zheng Clan' s Marriages to the Imperial Family in the Northern Dynasty

In the Northern Dynasty,the gentry class of the Han Group represented by the Zheng Clan in Xingyang Prefecture established strong marriage alliances with the imperial family.These marriages emerged after Emperor Xiaowen decided upon the hierarchy of different surnames,so different branches of the same clan might not enjoy equal status.In addition,more women than men of the Zheng Clan were married to the imperial family,and they didn't care much about their seniority in the clan.Marriages of the Zheng Clan to the imperial family had great influence on the political achievements,family rites and life of the clan.For this reason,research into the Zheng Clan's marriages to the imperial family can shed new light on the social life of the gentry class.
