On the Characterization of the Protagonist in Slaughterhouse-Five From the Perspective of Trauma Theory

Kurt Vonnegut＇s representative work Slaughterhouse-Five is an anti-war novel based on his experience in World War 11. There is not a single conventionally militant hero or a Christian character in it. From the perspective of trauma theory, most characters including Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist, and the peculiar character Kurt Vonnegut, the author and narrator, show the characteristic of being real or deformed. Vonnegut＇s writing process was one of reappearance of the trauma. He strived to over- come the trauma, and to accept it at the same time. This unique traumatic writing revealed the dramatic harm that the war brought to people, confirming the theme of anti-war.
