英语委婉语是一种重要的社会语言现象，是语言交流中的润滑剂和消毒剂。现阶段对英语委婉语的研究主要停留在语义学和语用学的基础上，不能很好地揭示它的本质．并且把人的认知能动性排除在外。英语委婉语是人的一种心理现象，对它的研究离不开对认知心理的解释。运用认知语言学理论对英语委婉语进行分析，为揭示英语委婉语的实质提供了理论工具和新视角。
English euphemism is a kind of very important social and cultural phenomenon. It purifies and oils language communication. In the present stage, studies on English euphemism are mainly restricted to the field of semantics and pragmatics, which fails to completely reveal the nature of English euphemism. However, Eng- lish euphemism is also a kind of psychological phenomenon. Studies on English euphemism can not be successful without the interpretation of cognitive linguistics. The application of cognitive linguistics to English euphemism analysis provides a new perspective to reveal the nature of English euphemism.
