The Cult of Human Nature of Earnest Feelings--An Annotation on the Image of Beauties in Ming and Qing Literature

In the essential elements of the Image of Beauties in Ming and Qing Literature, sexual charms, namely the natural beauty, were an external beauty; literary talent, namely the beauty of literary ability, was an internal beauty; and passions, namely the emotional beauty, were the basic beauty of human nature, which connected internal and external beauties. These three essential elements penetrated into each other and concurred to form the beauty of personality and the beauty of humanity. So much of Images of Beauties in Ming and Qing Literature reflected not only the literati's illusory imagination of an ideal society, but also their spiritual cult of an ideal human nature of earnest feelings. But what they received was only the visionary self-fulfillment and shallow self-glorification.
