Wilderness in Modern Civilization:Professor Hou Wenhui and her International Vision on Environmental History

Professor Hou Wenhui＇s research on American environmental history is characteristic of her attention to wilderness. She believes that human beings should not make light of wilderness in the process of modern civili- zation and attempt to wipe out wilderness from the earth. In the course of the rapid economic evolution, people should rethink utilitarianism, which blindly pursues the pace of wealth accumulation. In addition, reflection on the relationship between human and nature is necessary. In other words, human beings should regulate their be- haviors and treat nature kindly. Overall, we should slow down the pace of social development and promote har- monious coexistence between wilderness and civilization.
