The Value and Significance of the Concept of the "Wuling Ethnic Area"-Reflection on the Study of Ba Culture in Selected Works on Ethnology by Li Shaoming

The "Wuling ethnic area" is an academic term related to the concept of a regional ethnology proposed at the beginning of the 21st century by Li Shaoming,a well-known Chinese ethnologist.The li shaoming minzuxue wenxuan (Selected Works on Ethnology by Li Shaoming)hereafter Selected Works] was published by the Chengdu Press at the end of 20th century.This book includes 58 articles selected from more than 150 articles written by Li Shaoming from the years 1963 to 1994.The contents of the articles include ethnological theory;the social character of the LiangshanYi;the history of the Yi;the social histories of the Qiang,of the Tibetans,and of the Tujia;the ethnic origins of ancient ethnic groups and their related burial forms;ethnic identification,etc.This book generally reflects the author's research result on these topics since the 1950s.By combing it with Li Shaoming's ethnological research and related academic activities,this publication can be regarded as an important summary of Li Shaoming's academic research before the formation of his core concept of a regional anthropology /ethnology.
