Going Out of the Cave--A New Reading of Winesburg, Ohio through Plato's "Allegory of the Cave"

Many similarities could be found if one compares Sherwood Anderson's Winesburg,Ohio with Plato's "Allegory of the Cave." These similarities include not only images but symbols and thematic concerns.This essay,therefore,intends firstly to analyse and comment on these similarities,and by doing so find our way in understanding the various ways of small town lives in Anderson's novel.Further discussion would be made on how the pursuit of truth in "the Allegory of the Cave" has been practiced and eventually realized in Winesburg,Ohio.The last part of the essay would be mainly on the discussion of the different writing purposes between Anderson and Plato.It is hoped that,through such a discussion,different understandings of human existence due to different ages are decoded.
