Secularization of Buddhism in the Shanshan Kingdom Reflected in Kharosthi Documents

Based on a thorough analysis of Kharosthi documents and studies of geographical as well as historical materials, the paper describes the Buddhist monks' life in the Shanshan Kingdom and points out that the secularization of Buddhism was not a special phenomenon after its spread into China. The origin of the Buddhism in the Shanshan Kingdom is from the Kushan Empire in northwest India. After entering into China, Buddhism became more and more secular to adapt itself to local society and ecological environment.
