清季张之洞“君子儒”探赜

A Brief Probe into Zhang Zhidong as a Model of "Confucian of Virtue" in Late Qing Dynasty

The image of "Confucian of virtue" is well illustrated in Zhang Zhidong,a great Confucian with a number of high-rank government positions in late Qing Dynasty.His thought of governance and self-rule is fully presented in several aspects,such as his deep inquiry into the school of "Gongyang",his reconcilement of Han and Song Confucians,his objective attitude to both Chinese and Western learning and his pragmatic strategy.His academic tenet,idea of governance and himself as a master of "being internal saint so as to govern the outer world benevolently",has surely become a model for the later generations.
