Terminology Evolvement of Urban Renewal in China: The Change in Understanding

Previously referred to as ＂urban redevelopment＂ , urban renewal is currently known as ＂the renovation of old towns, old villages and old factories＂ . Such an evolvement of terminology reflects changes in the city＇ s understanding towards the urban renewal process. Aimed at clarifying these understandings, the paper discusses the background, definitions, causes and significance of this evolvement. Although progress has been made concerning the understanding towards urban renewal, a more precise terminology and a much more positive attitude towards it are yet to be explored.
