The Annotated Catalog of The Emperor's Four Treasuries has unique significance and status in stylistic research. As an imperially-sponsored, collectively-compiled bibliographic masterpiece, the Annotated Catalog reviewed and criticized literary works in past dynasties. It is outstanding among stylistic works for its broad academic horizon, and numerous and complicated issues involved in it. Many critical stylistic views were presented through book-selecting, editing, and annotating of The Emperor's Four Treasuries: stylistic pedigrees, classifications, origins, normative characteristics, the stylistic features of paralleled prose and ancient style prose, historical biography and fiction, and so on. These views represented the general values and knowledge of stylistics in the early and the mid Qing periods, and greatly influenced the stylistic research of contemporary and later generations.
