《中国丛报》与中国历史研究

《中国丛报》是由美国传教士创办、1832-1851年发行于广州等地的综合性英文月刊。这份刊物不仅报道时政新闻,而且发表了大量关于中国的学术论文,在西方学术界重构关于中国的知识体系过程中具有显著地位。它所发表的关于中国历史的文章,是其中一个组成部分。这些文章对中国传统史学著作和19世纪中期以前天主教传教士关于中国历史文化的观念提出质疑,发表了众多评论中国史学著作和西方学术界的中国历史研究著作的文章,主张重写中国史,就中国历史上的一些关键性问题提出了具有深远影响的观点。该刊还将一些中国历史文化典籍作了翻译或评介。这些,在近代中西文化交流史上都具有不可忽视的意义。

The Chinese Repository and Chinese History Studies

The Chinese Repository,a monthly English magazine established by American missionaries and issued in Guangzhou,Macao and Hong Kong from 1832 to 1851,not only reported contemporary news,but published a lot of research papers about China,thus remarkably contributing to the re-construction of sinology in Western academia.Among the papers those about Chinese history challenged the narratives of Chinese past in the works by Chinese historians as well as those by Catholic missionaries coming to China before the mid-19th Century,put forward that Chinese history should be re-written and other important ideas with profound influence.Among the papers there are those introducing or translating Chinese classics and other historical works.All the papers are significantly important in the history of the Sino-Western cultural exchanges.
