On Ironic Rhetoric in Novels

Ironic rhetoric is a concept with potential expansion. With ironic techniques and devices being constantly enriched, its sense boundary is constantly expanded. Successful irony helps reflect its rhetorical aims in an implicitly and yet powerful way. Irony consists of three elements, namely the author's non narrative rhetorical insertion in his/ her novel, contrast of opposing extremes as well as relaxed, confident sense of detachment and distance. All these elements decide the nature of irony and the manifestation of their function.
