曹雪芹是北京人、北京作家。这个认识意义重大。北京的"帝都文化"是《红楼梦》一书的文化渊源。不了解18世纪中叶的"帝都文化"就无法真正读懂《红楼梦》。曹雪芹倘若没有回到北京这段生活经历,今日我们所读到的《红楼梦》,极可能就真的是一本《风月宝鉴》或是一本《情僧录》。在语言文字方面,曹雪芹熟练地运用了含有广大北方地区语言中方言土语的北京话,使《红楼梦》中的人物语言雅俗相融、生动鲜活、字字传神,从而使这部小说脍炙人口、雅俗共赏。所以说,《红楼梦》是一部京味十足的小说,而且是京味小说中的典范之作。红学中的一些问题争论不休,恐怕是与不熟悉或没有考虑帝都文化背景有关。"帝都文化"问题,应该予以高度重视。

Knowing that Cao Xueqin is a Beijing man and a writer in Beijing has great significance.The "imperial capital culture" of Beijing was the cultural resource of A Dream of Red Mansions;therefore,if we do not understand the "imperial capital culture",we can not comprehend the novel in deed.If Cao Xueqin had not returned to Beijing to live,the novel we read today could possibly a novel like Fengyue Baojian(《风月宝鉴》)or Qingseng Lu(《情僧录》).Cao Xueqin skillfully used Beijing Mandarin which includes dialect and idiom of the languages in vast north China by which the speech of characters in the novel to be elegant and common,vivid,lifelike and alive,thus made the novel to be one with universal praise.Therefore,A Dream of Red Mansions is a model novel of Beijing-taste novels.Some endless disputes about the novel are possibly caused by unfamiliarity or even no consideration about the "imperial capital culture".
