Rawls's Study on Public Reason and Modern Democratic Ideas

In his later life, Rawls clearly expounds the basic concept of public reason. Through an analysis of the basic situations of modern democratic society, Rawls concludes that a concept of political justice can be built on the cultural tradition of public politics in the democratic society while public reason based on this concept will become the public foundation of justifying political justice. Thus, a study of the relationship between public reason and modern democracy will help us to better understand the basic traits of Rawls'' idea on public reason.
