佛塔崇拜与大乘佛教的起源——以下田正弘的学说为中心

关于大乘佛教起源的讨论是国际佛教学界的热门论题。在日本佛教界，长期以来平川彰提出的佛塔信仰起源说影响最大，几乎成为学术界的共识。但下田正弘在《涅椠经的研究——大乘经典研究方法试论》一书中对平川彰的研究提出了异议，其主要理由是，佛塔崇拜在原始佛教时期就已出现，并且广泛流行于在家居士和出家僧侣中间，历史上并不存在一个独立于僧团之外的所谓在家佛塔崇拜群体。大乘的思想出自于原始佛教时期就存在的林居者集团。他们与僧院住者在生活方式、价值观和追求目标上的不同，使他们在传统的口传佛教之外，以书写的方式创造出了包括《涅槃经》在内的大量的大乘经典，在所谓的追求自我解脱的声闻乘之外，开创了以利益他者为最高追求的菩萨乘。在研究方法上，下田正弘没有满足于文本解读和文献内在逻辑的解明，而是力图将文献中呈现的内在逻辑与社会历史的外在逻辑相照应，在两者的交叉点中找到学术问题的所在和解决问题的线索。这是对传统文献学研究方法的突破。
