| Abstract: | The defects in Isabel's character of the Portrait of a Lady partially account for her tragic fate,leading her to a loveless marriage. Due to the confinements of social reality and conventions and James' s ambivalent attitude towards love,her way to return to her unhappy marriage in the end is only natural and comes as no surprise. |
