| 摘 要： | 厄普代克以霍桑的经典名著《红字》中的丁梅斯代尔为原型塑造了《整个月都是礼拜天》中的男主人公马斯菲尔德,并将人物的生活背景现代化,使作品的意味更为独特。通过对两部作品的比较分析,发现厄普代克试图通过马斯菲尔德的种种言行来嘲讽和颠覆丁梅斯代尔的虔诚教徒形象,以此启发读者对《红字》中的既定结论进行重新思考,同时展示了当代美国的文化形态。

| Abstract: | Prototyping Dimmesdale in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, Updike wrote his A Month of Sundays,remolding him into his Marshfield and modernizing his living conditions.A comparative study of the two novels shows that Updike tries to satirize Dimmesdale through Marshfield's words and deeds,dismantling the former as a pious Christian.In doing so,A Month of Sundays inspires the readers to rethink the conclusions in The Scarlet Letter,and reveals the value and culture of modern America. |
