《科学》杂志与五四现代白话文的形成——重新审视五四现代白话文的产生及其现代性意义

《科学》杂志并不以文体变革为己任，反而走在了中国现代语体文变革的最前列——最先采用横排书写方式、最先使用西式的标点，并且早在《新青年》有意提倡白话文的两年前，就已经刊发了极具现代汉语特质的白话文。《科学》杂志上的文体语言变革方向与后来汉语现代化转型的方向是一致的，它的出现标志着晚清白话文运动向五四现代白话文运动的转变。更为重要的是，这种转变完全是在无意识中完成的，这种无意识的转变恰恰显示出了西方科学思想在中国现代白话文形成中的关键作用，进而揭示出五四思想革命与语言革命之间的血肉联系。这一点正是学界一直所忽视的，由此需要我们调整对五四白话文运动的研究视野。

Science and the Formation of the May 4 Modern Vernacular Chinese——Reexamination of the Origin and the Modern Significance of the May 4 Modern Vernacular Chinese

Science magazine did not take the literary style transformation as its own duty but rather initiated the variant change in the modern Chinese colloquial language, taking the lead in the use of horizontal type - setting writing and the Western style of punctuation. It had already had publications in modern vemacular Chinese with typical characteristics even two years earlier than the promotion of the vernacular by The New Youth. The stylistic transformation in Science was in consistent with the afterward development of modern Chinese language, symbolizing the transformation of the vernacular Chinese in the late Qing Dynasty to that of the May 4 Period. More importantly, this transformation went on naturally, revealing the significant role of Western scientific ideas in the formation of modem vernacular Chinese and implying the connection between the May 4 ideological revolution and the language revolution. This is what has been ignored by scholars to some extent and it is expected to readjust the perspective to the study of the May 4 vernacular movement.
