礼貌是一种社会现象,也是一种语言现象.礼貌行为和语言是成功地实现有效而得体交际必不可少的手段和策略.礼貌语言行为是长期历史文化传统的产物,是历史文化的沉淀,并与该文化的其他因素有密切的联系.不同的历史渊源、价值观念、思维模式等决定着礼貌原则的合适性.礼貌具有深刻的文化内涵,其表达方式取决于语境.但是不论是礼貌还是不礼貌,都是相对概念,不同的文化有不同的理解.

A Contrastive Study of Politeness between Chinese and English

Politeness is a social phenomenon.Polite speech act is essential for successful communication.Due to differences in culture,there is no universal formula for politeness.English linguist Geofrey Leech proposed 6 politeness principles while Chinese pragmatist Gu Yueguo proposed 5.Polite speech act is the product of history,tradition and culture.Historical origins,values and thinking models all contribute to the appropriateness of politeness.In Chinese culture,attention is given to non-verbal communication,while in the west people frequently employ politeness expressions for their values on individualism,equality,freedom and love.Though decided by context,politeness is just a relative concept.Different cultures have different interpretations.In China today,when communicating between cultures,we need to learn to tolerate the differences, share the differences,develop empathy and adapt ourselves to new cultures.
