与汉语世界的译介不同，马哈福兹历史小说在英语世界的译介，表现出系统性和鲜明的特征：这些历史小说的英译本不约而同地关注作品的“古埃及”背景。其主要原因在于西方文化语境中的读者“选择”吸收了“文本化”的古埃及形象。但事实上，这一“文本化”的古埃及形象，并不符合作者本人的写作意图。作者之所以要集中以“古埃及”为历史背号进行写作，与他所处的现实语境密不可分，他希望通过描写“前伊斯兰”时期的古埃及，表达自己以埃及为本位的民族主义思想。

The Reception of Historical Novels by Mahafuz in the English World: A Post-colonial Perspective

Different from the translation of Chinese novels, the English translation of historical novels by Najib Mahafuz is systematic and has remarkable features: all their English versions are unanimously concerned with the background of "ancient Egypt." The main reason is that readers in the context of western culture "chose" to absorb the "textualized" image of ancient Egypt, which, however, does not conform to the intentions of the writer. His focus on "ancient Egypt" as the historical background for his writing has close relations with the realistic context in which he lived. He wished to express his nationalist thought based on Egypt by describing the ancient Egypt in the "pre-Islam" period.
