张元济在编辑出版实践中的创新精神主要表现在四个方面:首先,在出版方向的革新上,为了适应时代需要,进行中小学教科书改革；其次,在出版内容的突破上,应现代新式教育的需要,编纂汉语辞书和双语词典,出版高水平学术著作；再次,在出版技术的改进上,充分利用现代出版技术校勘和影印古籍善本；最后,在著作权的保护上,张元济是中国著作权保护制度最早的呼吁者之一,也是中国著作权制度建立的直接参与者和最早采用著作权保护的实践者之一.

Zhang Yuanji's innovation in editing and publishing is mainly demonstrated in four aspects. In the first place, with regard to the content orientation, he reformed primary and secondary school textbooks to adapt to the needs of the era. Secondly, from the perspective of content, he compiled Chinese dictionaries and bilingual dictionaries to meet the needs of the new modern education, and he published high level academic works. Thirdly, in view of publication technology, he made full use of modern publishing technology to publish, collate and photocopy ancient rare books. Lastly, with regard to copyright protection, Zhang Yuanji is one of the first advocators of copyright protection system, who also directly participated in the establishment of the system. Besides, he is the earliest practitioner of copyright protection.
