新词本质上是认知思维作用于认知过程的语言外化形式。从思维角度探究新词的生成机制不仅有助于发现人类认知方式对词汇演变的影响和制约作用,而且更有助于透过新词生成的方式解读语言与认知的内在联系,深化语言研究的路向和内涵。对英语新词为何生成和如何生成两个基本问题的研究发现,作为人类认知基本思维方式的比较思维是英语新词生成的思维基础,相邻比较和相似比较是英语新词生成的主要思维方式,两者各自并交互发挥作用,形成英语新词生成的基本思维机制。

The Thinking Mechanism of English New Words

New words embody, directly, the impact of researching new words, from the perspective of the way that human thinking affects and constrains of thinking on human cognition. The significance how human thinks, lies not only in searching out language use, but in understanding the inner-rela- tionship between language and cognition, which may enrich the path and dimension of linguistic stud- ies. The findings, based on the research of how and why English new words are produced, indieate that comparative thinking matters much in the production of new words while comparative thinking modes grounded in contiguity and similarity respectively constitute the thinking mechanism that moti- vates the production of new words.
