湖南人的“独立之根性”是湖湘文化精神特质的一种人格化表现。这种“独立之根性”使以政治为本位、以“经世致用”与“原道”作为人生的基本的行为主导方式的湖湘士人特别重志节，特别重独辟蹊径，特别重天下苍生，特别重“独立不迁”、“深固难徙”，而表现出一种“宏识孤怀”、“敢为天下先”的“原道”的襟怀，乃至“殉道”的英雄气。五四时期的湖南报人，在特有的历史文化环境中，最充分地表现了这种“独立之根性”，最充分地表现了一种探索大本大源的血性、刚性和智性。具体主要表现在两个方面：一是刚正不阿的人格精神，一是独辟蹊径的求索精神。
