A Study on Metaphor from Memetics

Metaphor is the projection from source domain onto target domain. The similarity of vehicle and tenor is the basis of structuring metaphor, which provides the conditions for copying and imitating. This article is based on the theory of memetics. It mainly analyzes the cognitive function of the metaphor. It also discusses the effect and function of the memetic mechanism on the formation, development and transmission of metaphors. It concludes that metaphor is the performance method of meme and that the memetic mode eventually forms the cognitive motivation basis of metaphor.
