京师五城中学堂与清末中等教育近代化

五城中学堂是北京师范大学附中的前身,也是中国最早的国立中学堂。西方国家是在教育发展的过程中逐渐出现了"中学"概念,而五城中学堂的鲜明特点是"概念先行",即在其建立之前就已经出现了"中学"这一概念。1901年～1912年期间,五城学堂建立之初在三级学制的建立、班级授课制、新课程设置方面对北京地区乃至全国中等教育近代化做出了重要贡献。
