托马斯·德·昆西作为英国的浪漫主义散文家和文学批评家,将文学划分为知识文学和力量文学并倾向后者;周作人作为中国著名的文学家和新文学运动主将之一,借用前人的提法将文学划分为"载道"和"言志"亦倾向后者。人们常认为这两个两分法是相当的。然而它们虽相似,却亦有不同。研究表明,他们所处的时代及文化影响了他们的文学思想,体现在他们对文学的理解、态度的既相似又有不同,这就是他们两分观的相似与不同。

Ascending Power and Personal Emotion——A Comparative Study on De Quincey's and Zhou Zuo-ren's Literature Dichotomies

Thomas De Quincey,an English essayist and critic,made his famous distinction between "literature of knowledge" and "literature of power" and favored the latter.Zhou Zuoren,a famous Chinese litterateur and one of the key sponsors of the New Literature Movement in China,also made his distinction between "the literature conveying truth/Dao" and "the literature expressing emotion/Zhi" by borrowing the diction of "Writings are for conveying truth/Dao" and "Poetry are for expressing emotion/Zhi" from Chinese traditional literary ideas,with the latter as his favorite.The two dichotomies,though similar and generally considered almost interchangeable,still bear many differences.Studies show that the times in which they lived respectively and their cultures affected their literary thoughts,revealed by their similar and different individual tastes and understandings about literature,i.e.,the similarities and differences of their dichotomies.
