On Gong Zizhen's Critical Consciousness and His Spirit of Enlightenment

The philosophy of Gong Zizhen marked the beginning of the Chinese modern philosophy. He tookthe classic learning as the criterion in his study, and under the cover of making textual research of classic workshe gave a full display of the essence of "sublime words with profound meaning" from the "Chunqiou"-styledGongyang school of learning. In this way he criticized the dark reality of the society, expounding the worldaffairs far and wide, expressing his ideas of transforming the existing laws and systems. Gong Zizhen wasnever successful in his official career, yet as a literary genius and a philosopher full of sorrow-ridden criticalconsciousness he turned out to be the great talent who opened up a new trail of general mood in the circle ofthinkers in the late Qing Dynasty. Deep inside his thoughts, the subjective spirit of chivalry and the sense of-disillusion with Daoist nihility had resulted in the contradiction in his ideological characteristics.
