| 摘 要： | 中唐以后,随着藩镇设置的普遍化,地方三级制逐渐取代两级制并成为行政的主体,而国家两级制的残余形态——直隶州则成为地方行政的"孤岛"。通过对唐代地方体制的演变、直隶州的产生、直隶州的内涵、直隶州刺史的来源、直隶州设置目的等相关问题的探讨,可发现唐代直隶州设置的初衷是为了确保中央对若干战略区域的有效控制。由于中央对此认识不足,措施不力,加上客观因素的制约,使得中晚唐直隶州制度没能成为遏制藩镇势力膨胀的重要工具,却为五代、北宋消弭割据隐患提供了直接的思路。
