论唐宋时期毗沙门天王向城市保护神的转化

唐宋时期,佛教神灵毗沙门天王护城保民的特性鲜明地表现出来,在其流行的过程中逐渐成为了保护城池的重要神灵。随着它在民众中盛行程度的增强,其所具有的功能不断拓展,从掌控生死、消灾去病到驱除鬼魅、送子迎福无所不能。这一现象的出现与佛教在唐宋时期的中国化、世俗化有一定的关联,同时,也与毗沙门天王的原始身份以及当时北方城市战乱频仍密不可分。
