Adventurous Thought and Melancholic Spirit--On Simmel's Reflection of Modernity

Simmel was one of the important theorists in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Facing the problems with the development of modern society, such as the gloomy philosophy, money culture and women's prostitution, he made his adventurous thought reborn and had reasonable explanation. Being a Jew, Simmel was not in high spirits from his adventurous thoughts. Because he was Jew, his life and academic pursuit is not smooth. The real reason of his melancholic spirit, however, came from his seeing through the world, which made him fall into pessimism.
