The Expression of Implied Negation and Face-Saving Devices in Academic Writing

It is a common practice in academic writing to point out the shortcomings and problems of the previous researches, which means a potential face-threatening act to the author （ s ） . Therefore, it is of great importance to express negations in a tactful way. Due to different cultural background, academic tradition as well as idiosyncratic style, there exist different interpretations of the relationship between negation and face. This paper focuses on implied negation and face-saving devices employed in English academic compositions at international levels, so as to enhance the pragmatic awareness of Chinese scholars in this specific register.
