This paper pinpoints the specific rules from the examples taken from Hawkes' Version of Hongloumeng to answer the question: In what cases will Hawkes resort to foreignization,contrary to his universally acknowledged strategy orientation? Hawkes applies foreignization and domestication flexibly in his version.Theoretically,foreignization and domestication coexist in a dialectical relationship.In each exchange event of this process,neither one nor the other translating strategy can go it alone.For successful communication,an optimal balance should be established between foreignization and domestication.
