The Conversational Implication in The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife

The more and more application of lingustic theories in literary criticism has broadened the view of literary criticism,and enriched the means of literary studies.With reference to the co operative principles of conversational implication,and the pragmatic principles of the speech act theory and the context theory,a tentative analysis is hereby made to the dialogues in Earnest Hemingway's short story The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife,in order to adequately acknowledge Hemmingway's refined techniques of characterization achieved by means of conversational implication,in an attempt to enhance our appreciation of the precise and scientific features of this great work.
