神话—原型批评理论的先驱弗莱不仅提出世界文学发展史是沿着神话—传奇—悲剧—喜剧—讽刺这一环形轨道运行的循环理论 ,而且还指出人类语言的发展轨迹也是一个环状结构。弗莱在阐述这三个语言阶段的不同特征以及它们之间的相互关系之后 ,指出《圣经》语言的独特性 ,视其为并不汇入语言循环的第四种语言模式。该理论对当今世界的语言学研究提供了一个全新的视角并产生了十分重要的影响。

On the Three Language Modes of Northrop Frye

In addition to his theory of myth-romance-tragedy-comedy-satire circular movement in literature, Northrop Frye, the forerunner of the theory of Mythico-archetypal criticism, draws a new orbit in the development of human language. On pile of his expounding of the typical features in each phase and the differences between them three, he brings forth a fourth language mode in biblical language, which does not join in the circular movement for its uniqueness. With this new theory, Frye provides a totally new perspective for the linguistic studies throughout the world and has had a marked effect upon them.
