From Historical Explanation to Historical Narrative:A Review of Translations of Historical Philosophy

For quite some time in the past, we were prone to treat the western philosophy of history as the antithesis of historical materialism of orthodox Marxism, with little interest in translating and reading the classics in that field. This has somewhat prevented the historical materialism from developing further. In the last decade, however, some changes have taken place. Recently a Chinese translation of a series of classics on western philosophy of history has just been published. The translation, for which Professor Han zhen is responsible, is expected to bring us more surprise, for it provides a whole picture of the latest development in western philosophy of history and covers such topics as historical experience, historical explanation, historical narrative and historical metaphor.
